The Beach - A Place of Transition The beach - where water meets land, where life starts and ends, where the sea spits back what humans have thrown in and takes what they are trying to safeguard, a place that evokes yearning for the unknown and peace of homecoming, a space that creates borders while washing others away, a constant give and take, a back and forth - a place which has held people’s fascination over centuries.
When I was so lucky to live only fiftly meters away from the beach during my stay-abroad as a Foreign Language Assistant in 2007/8, I did not try to escape the call of the beach, but completely gave in to its lure. Many hours were spent strolling along seemingly endless stretches of sandy or pebble beaches, which resulted in my collection of pictures. Those you will see in the exhibition were taken in coastal towns in the South of England, mainly in Sandwich and Brighton. The upcoming congress ‘Twixt Land and Sea: The Beach in Literature, Film and Cultural Theory’ organised by our English Department offered an ideal opportunity to finally share some of my photographs and above all my fascination with other beach lovers.
Unfortunately, I will not be around for a chat during the exhibition, as the call of beaches has reached me again and sent me on another journey, this time to Bangladesh to explore more exotic places of transition.
