1. Welcome the new members
Angela welcomes the new members David, Björn and Chris and thanks them for joining the Arts Council. Since Katia is not certain yet if she will be at the University next semester, she keeps the option open of joining the AC at a later stage. Angela welcomes her as a guest on today’s meeting.
6. 11th Anniversary of Arts Council/111th Anniversary of Engl. Dept.
(As Franz and Tanja both have to leave earlier, the agenda is changed in its order.) The Arts Council will work together with the department in the preparations for the celebration of our anniversaries. It is proposed that a subcommittee of the Arts Council should start gathering ideas in the autumn term and also find other students who wish to participate in the planning and organisation of these events. The anniversary year will begin in January 2009, which means that by then the AC needs to have organised the anniversary projects. Franz proposes several possible projects:
- “Shakespeare Road Show” = “seminal excerpts of plays by Shakespeare with a parodistic slant” (on tour through Switzerland);
- “Multilingual Poetry Slam” = work together with other language departments (ex. German, French, etc.);
- Live performances of “Poetry and Music of the 1960’s”;
- “Cinderella” again (Franz would have to adapt the script);
The booklet informing about the projects for the 100th anniversary of the Engl. Dept. might be a helpful source for project ideas. It is clear that the AC cannot repeat the enormous amount of events that were planned for the 100th anniversary year – but nevertheless it would be nice if many students took this opportunity to participate, organise and plan diverse events.
Several members of the Arts Council volunteer for the subcommittee: Franz (as department representative), Tanja (as treasurer), Chris and maybe David. It would be helpful if the members of the Arts Council asked friends and fellow students who might be interested in joining the subcommittee and in organising events. The subcommittee would not have to plan and organise everything alone; it would rather co-ordinate things with the head of the department (Prof. Virginia Richter) and be responsible for the project proposals coming in from the students’s side.
Franz suggests that it might be helpful to assign different areas to the members of the subcommittee, such as ‘music’, ‘film’, ‘theatre’, etc. This way the people would have a ‘special area’ to cover and could co-ordinate things more easily.
The subcommittee should get in contact with Prof. Richter (head of department) to inform her about who is in the subcommittee.
2. Approval of last minutes
The minutes cannot be approved since there is no majority present at the meeting. Regula will post them on the black board anyway, and will also give Cindy the ‘ok’ for posting them on the website (if she has not done so already).
3. Check to-do list
- It is not clear if Matt really has sent the list of venues to Cindy and if Sandro gave Cindy the video of the last OAPE-evening (called (Non-) Sense); Cindy is asked to report on this to the committee;
- Angela asks the new and some current/former members (Franz, Tanja, Simon, Sandro) to send a picture to Cindy for the ‘Member’s Section’;
- Regula will remind Simon again to write an introductory text, as he has not done so yet;
- Tanja has not yet written the guidelines on how to hand in the finances to her, since she had no time to do so. She will do it sometime in the future;
- Angela and Franz have contacted Nicole Nyffenegger and Professor Bridges and have clarified our reasons for the rejection of their project proposal.
4. Plan next term
The members who are leaving at the end of this term need to be replaced. There will be the following changes:
- Chair: Angela Kummer resigns; Chris Huguenin takes over;
- Secretary: Regula Koenig resigns; David Schönthal takes over;
- Website: Cindy-Jane Armbruster resigns; Björn Messerli takes over;
- Inventory Person: Alexandra de Peyer resigns; David Schönthal takes over;
- PR-person: if Katia Grütter can participate, she will take over that post;
- Film Club: Sandro Ilg resigns; Alex Sigrist takes over;
Tanja, Franz and Christiane will continue in their present positions.
5. Project information (“Oleanna”)
Since Cindy, who was responsible for the organisation of that event, is not present, this point is postponed to another meeting. However, it would be good if she handed in some form of written report, as she is leaving the AC at the end of this term.
7. Project proposals
Franz reports to the committee that he is trying to get the poet Donny O’Rourke to perform for the students of the English Department.
8. Approve revised directives
The revised directives cannot be approved since there is no majority present at the meeting.
9. AOB
- The props and costumes of the last OAPE evening will be put into the cellar sometime this week. Tanja will hand a list to Alexandra of all the new items, so that she can add them to the inventory. Regula will give Alexandra a new version of the inventory, as she has already added some material on her own;
- Photo Exhibition by Lukas Etter: It is not quite clear how much the Arts Council will finally pay to Lukas for his photo exhibition. Regula will check the previous minutes to see what the AC had decided previously. Angela will ask Lukas to put together a detailed budget of the money he spent on this project and to hand it in to Tanja. In an e-mail vote the committee can then decide on the amount of money which will be paid to Lukas at the end of this term.
- Angela informs the new members that she has descriptions of the different ‘jobs’ on the committee and that she will give these to them so that they have an idea of what they have to do. She will also send a complete list with all the e-mail addresses to the members of the Arts Council, so that everyone can contact each other.
- Finally, Angela invites everyone to the farewell dinner on Thursday, 29th May in the Tea Corner!
