1. Project submissions

a. Jan Horner poetry reading (Schweighauser)

Poetry reading by Canadian poet Jane Horner was submitted by P. Schweighauser who is asking for 500 CHF of non-return support. The reading will take place on November 29, 12.15-13.15 in room F-106 (Prof. Rippl's lecture slot).

Decision: Approved by the board.

b. Pantomime (Simon Hicks)

Department project involving large numbers of people. Date and location are yet to be set. There will be 4 performances and Simon aims at Mappamondo or Muesmatt as a location. He asks for 3500 CHF in deficit cover.

Decision: Approved by the board.

c. Film Club (Tanja Willi and Sam Linder)

Tanja and Sam ask for continuing support of the film club in the winter semester of 150 CHF to cover all costs for posters, flyers and movies. They also ask if the addition of subtitles to the movies changes the Council's attitude towards the project. The board dismisses such worries.

Decision: Approved by the board.

2. Approved payments

Tanja asks if the following payments (which have partly been made and partly still need to be executed) could be put down in the minutes as the e-mail approvals lack the necessary legal power to justify such payments. They concern:

3. General Assembly

The next GA will be combined with the one of the Students Committee. Simon will contact their secretary Melanie Martin (email address removed) to arrange matters.

The Arts Council offers a 100 CHF support for the organization of this event. The date will be agreed on in cooperation with the Committee. It is hoped that more people can be reached and new members can be found if we combine forces.

Ron will still preside over the Assembly as the Chairman until the new Chairperson has been elected. He excludes Tuesday from the possible dates for the Assembly.

4. Website

Cindy introduces us to the state of the union concerning the Arts Council webiste: The domain www.artscouncil.unibe.ch is ready to be put online but nothing is on there yet. She will provide a mailing list in order to forward requests and questions to the Arts Council members. Tanja will take care of the incoming requests.

Cindy needs everything in digital form and is reluctant to type out printed stuff for free.

The following material will be put on the web:

Cindy will hand over the password for maintenance in case of her absence, so others can have access to it as well. She will also work on the Arts Council logo which will remain approximately the same. The most recent information, as well as a link to the first bare-bone version of the website will be provided by Cindy via e-mail.

5. Succession of Ron as the Chairperson

Ron resigns as Chairman of the board due to a new and demanding job in the New European Movement Switzerland (NEBS) and his studies in law. He is simply unable to commit the necessary time to the guidance of the Arts Council. Also, no longer a member of the English Department, he is still legally responsible and liable for the Council, and therefore sees no reason not to end this difficult situation with his resignation.

The future Chairperson will need to represent the Arts Council, be responsible and liable for it, and most importantly give the lead.

Tanja decides to take over (thank you!) and therefore resigns from her position as a Treasurer. It is decided that it will be easier to find a new Treasurer than a new Chairperson. New members have to be found. Tanja will be made Chairwoman at the next General Assembly.

6. AOB

Matt intends to make a film out of Franz's "Knowing me, knowing you" starring Doris Lanz and Martyn Ford. The Arts Council should consider support for the project and think about whether the links to the English Department are enough to give that support. The issue will be discussed at the next meeting.

The date of the next meeting will be agreed upon via e-mail.

Minutes: November 16 by Sam Linder.
