The English Department Arts Council
The Arts Council of the English Department was founded in December 1998, the year of the Centenary Celebrations. At the end of that extraordinarily active and exciting year of cultural events organised by members of the English Department, it was discovered that the funds, collected for, and donated to, the English Department for the Centenary, were showing a healthy profit. It was decided that this money should be spent on further artistic activities in the English Department.
The Arts Council is a legally constituted organisation with its own "Statuten", and is represented by the executive members, the Board of the Arts Council, who hold regular meetings. The members are elected by the students of the English Department at an Annual General Meeting. The aim of the organisation is to sponsor cultural projects initiated by, and of interest to, students and staff of the English Department. All members of the English Department are encouraged to apply to the Arts Council for funding, through the application procedure. The Board will assess, and usually approve, the project according to the directives.
Since 1998, the finances of the Arts Council have improved, due mainly to the profits from a number of successful theatre productions, and this money has been used to support a wide variety of projects, which include poetry readings, art exhibitions, concerts, to name but a few. Many of the activities of the last few years, however, have involved theatre events of one kind or another, so there is a separate website for drama activities.
If you would like to plan, or even merely suggest, a cultural event, be it a play/poetry reading, a painting/photographic/sculpture exhibition, a small one-act evening or a full-scale theatre production, please do not hesitate to contact the board members, who will offer not only financial support but will also be able to help, whenever possible, with available resources. Art Council assistance will also include, to a certain extent, some advice, but most certainly encouragement.
